Transplanting his Piedmont roots into the foothills of the Witzenberg mountains, Toni Bianco "retired" from his road transport business in Johannesburg to this 450 ha. farm - 14 ha. of vineyards, 30 ha. of olives - and, like his cousins back in Italy, is producing those essentials of the Mediterranean diet, extra-virgin olive oil and rustic red wine.  Cabernet was first up, Shiraz and Pinotage will soon join the line, and no, the family is not going to change its, or the wines' name to Rosso.* John Platter, South African WInes, 2000

The vineyard and winemaking at De Heuvel conform to the integrated wine production standards recently set by the wine and spirit board.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used are from our own vineyards producing quality, modern style, early drinking wine, which has matured in small French and American oak barrels.

The wine makes and excellent companion with appetisers, meat and pasta dishes.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Platters says " NEW Most unusual, light tinted 97, incredibly aromatic: gluhwein spices plus herb garden/flower-bed cuttings.  Palate less exotic; leaner black cherries, muted vanilla oak-spice.  Alco under 12%, sugar above usual "dry" level at 5g/l.  Similar analysis for 98 but more conventional cassis/mulberry tones.  Give until latter 2000 to soften.  French/American oaked"

 

De Heuvel is also a producer of organically grown olives and olive oil
